History
The organization of the first athletic director’s association was in 1983. The name at that time was the Tennessee Athletic Directors. The organization struggled without a lot of participation. On January 29,1984 Bob Polston was elected the president and Bill Todd the vice-president.
On March 21, 1986, in Nashville, a meeting was held to reorganize the association. The group became known as the Tennessee High School Athletic Administrators Association or THSAAA. Bill Todd, Memphis City Schools, was elected president; Bud Potter, Sullivan South, was elected vice-president; Richard Carroll, Sullivan North was elected secretary/treasurer. The main topic of business was the National AD Conference to be held at the Opryland Hotel in December of 1986.
The next meeting was held on June 9, 1986 with Bill Todd, Bud Potter, Richard Carroll, Charlene Neal, & Rick Barker in attendance. A committee to host the National Conference consisted of Bill Todd, Bud Potter, Bob Polston, & Richard Carroll. The NIAAA Conference was held in Nashville in December of 1986.
The association continued to grow and the first State Athletic Director’s conference was held in 1991 at the Maxwell House Hotel in Nashville. In 1992 the conference was moved to the Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza and remained there until 1994 when it moved to the Opryland Hotel until 2006. The conference was held at the Cool Springs Marriott in Franklin from 2006-2008. The conference presently resides at the Embassy Suites in Murfreesboro.
In 2002 the organization changed the name from THSAAA to the Tennessee Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association or the TIAAA. The membership was approximately 30 in 1991, 300 in 2007, and over 400 in 2013. In 2017 the TIAAA joined forces with the TSSAA to become a dual state. Membership has grown tremendously during the first few years for Tennessee as a dual state, and in 2018 Tennessee had the largest per capita member growth of any state in America.
The NIAAA Conference was held in Nashville in December of 1986. Tennessee hosted three more national conferences, in December 1997, December 2007, and December 2016. In 1997 the host committee consisted of Richard Carroll, Mike Kimmons, Scott Brunette, Mert Duvall, Don Lady, Terry Glover, David Cawood, Emmitt Simon, Trina Melton, Phil Rogers, and Bob Polston.
